That's Why We Go to Work, Too!

The National Cristina Foundation recently received a special request from a Brownie Troop in High Ridge, Missouri (near St. Louis).

Here's what the troop wanted to do:
The girls in the Brownie Troop decided to take a portion of their cookie sale money this year to help a little girl (their same age) with leukemia. The girls went above and beyond to help this little girl (Hannah). They not only donated part of their cookie sales, but also held other fundraisers to help Hannah and her family.

The girls finally got to meet Hannah for the first time. They really embraced her, and Hannah asked to be a part of their Brownie Troop.  Due to many germs and viruses that Hannah cannot be around, she has to attend school via webcam. The Brownie Troop needed to obtain a laptop and webcam so that Hannah can participate in the Brownie Troop meetings.

The Brownie Troop also wanted to promote the acceptance of children with disabilities within other Girl Scout Troops. If we could donate a system to them, they plan to not only use the system for our own meetings, but also begin a "loan out" program for any other area troops that are willing to do the same thing with a child having a disability and unable to attend regular meetings.

For the short term, the expected outcome is to give a little girl with leukemia who cannot be exposed to germs and viruses due to her medical condition, the ability to participate with other girls her age in Girl Scout activities whether she is in the hospital or at home. In the long term, the troop would like to encourage other Girl Scout troops to include children with disabilities and make it as simple as possible so that they would embrace the idea as this troop has.

NCF contacted a long-time partner in Kansas City, Dave Sullivan, the executive director of ArtsTech to see if they might be able to help this troop’s dream become a reality.  ArtsTech’s mission is to better the lives of underserved urban youth through the development of marketable artistic and technical skills. Dave was excited to help and started his search for the equipment they needed.

On Monday, June 30th the National Cristina Foundation received a note from Dave Sullivan letting us know that ArtsTech had just mailed a refurbished laptop and webcam to the Brownie Troop leader.

Dave wrote:
We are honored to be of service and there was not any cost to the troop or recipient. I am just glad ArtsTech could help. This is why we go to work!

We salute the Brownies and Arts Tech for their efforts.  It's why we go to work, too!ArtsTech logo
