As I write this, I am preparing for some time to take some personal adventures and therefore doing quite a bit of reflection. One of the things I have enjoyed thinking about the most during this time is Dell’s relationship with the National Cristina Foundation.

The last few years at Dell have been quite an experience. I’ve learned about issues I had never thought of before, and gained a much deeper appreciation for the impact a company can have on the environment and society.

But of all the issues to learn and opportunities to address, what I have enjoyed the most is working with NCF. It’s inspiring that a model, so simple on one level, can help so many people. Every time I have the chance to speak to Yvette Marrin or a member of her team I’m reminded of how much they are doing to help others every day.

Dell has been working with NCF for nearly five years now and in that time tens of thousands of computers have been given an active second life through non-profits around the country. This system is a win for everyone: consumers have a no-cost way to responsibly dispose of used computers; non-profits and public agencies have access to much needed technology; and both Dell and NCF help meet a shared mission of ensuring that re-use is part of the total product life cycle.

There has been a good deal of news over the past few years about computer recycling and I’m reminded it’s important we not forget re-use. Used computers have tremendous potential to empower communities and help those who cannot afford new technology. Extended use of these systems also means a higher return on the natural resources required to produce these products.

One of the most exciting parts of working with NCF is our recent international expansion. We are currently offering programs in Brazil, Canada, Ireland and the United Kingdom. We are working with NCF every day to build out these programs and bring others online. Dell is truly proud of NCF’s willingness to expand internationally and to call NCF our global donation partner.

As I think that I’ve only been working on computer recovery issues for a few years and that Dell is learning more about this issue every day, it’s inspiring to think that NCF has been leading the way on this issue for 20 years.

Congratulations to NCF on your 20th anniversary. We can all learn a good deal from your dedication to using the power of technology to make the world a better place.
