Video Game Helps Math Students Vanquish an Archfiend: Algebra
A new video game is hitting 109 schools around New York and up to 300 schools nationwide. The game is called Digital M (which stands for Math). The game works on students ability to do math. By playing the video game once a week at school, many of the New York schools have been able to get their passing Algebra grades up to 82%. Many of the students have conquered their fear of math because of the game and actually look forward to doing it at school. The game is created by a New York company called Tabula Digita, and is being tested in the middle schools by help from Microsoft Corporation as well as six universities. Danielle DiMango-Maringo, principal of I.S. 30, said that Dimension M was played at least once a week in math classes and more often by students on their own at home. She added that the constant game-playing has led to less “math phobia” and has helped raise test scores on state math exams. Last year, 82 percent of I.S. 30 students passed the state math test, compared with 78 percent the year before
