Dylan Gainan skateboards on a private ramp at the home of Kristie Nerby in St. Ignatius recently. Nerby and others are leading an effort to build a city skatepark in St. Ignatius, where skateboarding is banned in many areas of town. Photo by TOM BAUER/MissoulianMontana, typically a very active state with it's "big sky country", has found that only 27% of their elementary students met the national fitness guidelines.  12% of middle school and 11% of high school meet the guidelines.  While most of the children in this state do have P.E., many still don't meet the fitness guidelines because their physical education might only be half the year or only once to twice a week.  With budget cuts that are being mirrored around the nation, sports programs are being cut to meet those budget demands.  Some teachers however, have found a way around it by going out each morning and walking or jogging with their students.  The question remains:  What is causing children to be so sedentary?  A little of it might be the school itself, a little technology and in many cases, parents who don't actively participate in getting their kids active because of their own busy lives.

We all know the health benefits of physical activity, but there are mental and behavioral benefits as well. We owe it to not only our youth, but to our teachers, to get our kids active during the school day.
