Top Ten Life Lessons from GamingThe much hyped Second Life is now taking on a new role:  second language teacher.  Kip Boahn who created ESL, Second Life English in Second Life is called Kip Yellowjacket in the virtual world.  The virtual island is entirely dedicated to supporting english teachers and students, where they learn in a new medium and new ways.  You can decide to try and order a meal at a fast food restaurant, just switch the window and you're there, standing in line getting ready to order.  Role playing and quests are also a part of the virtual world.  In one case, Kip dressed up as a pirate and the kids learned how to say different words such as "loot" and "booty."

The results, Boahn says, can surpass those of far more nose-to-the-grindstone approaches. "I have one student from China who used to be so shy," Boahn says, speaking of one of the many "Second Life" residents he's worked with exclusively from across the globe. "Now she's found her niche. She started participating in classes, then organizing events. Now she's ready to be an English teacher herself!"
