Parents like Linda Palmer, left, Julie Chiariello and Sybil Carlson believe vaccines are dangerousAn unusually high outbreak of measles in California has health officials concerned.  With innoculations, measles had all been eradicated, but the new trend toward not getting immunizations, has spread diseases.  Many of the children affected from the exempt kids who contracted the disease are one's who have been immunized.  Some parts of the country have whole communities who believe in abstaining from the practice.  Clusters of exempt children have been found to be as high as 15 to 18 percent in places such as Ashland, Oregon, Vashon and Washington.   Measles can be so severe, it can cause brain swelling, pneumonia and in rare cases even death.

In the wake of last month’s outbreak, Linda Palmer considered sending her son to a measles party to contract the virus. Several years ago, the boy, now 12, contracted chicken pox when Ms. Palmer had him attend a gathering of children with that virus. 

“It is a very common thing in the natural-health oriented world,” Ms. Palmer said of the parties.
