Google is in the process of creating a web service "intended to become a repository of knowledge".  Many believe it could compete with Wikipedia.  The transformation could take Google from being a search engine to a company that helps publish and create web content.  The service is called Knol (short for knowledge).  Whereas Wikipedia publishes what the whole community thinks, Knol only allows each designer of their own page to edit material, thereby creating a space where not one opinion lies but many.  The goal by Google is to have a space where people with knowledge on many topics can discuss and present their ideas.

“I’m looking forward to seeing what it ends up looking like,” Mr. Wales said.

Knol and Wikipedia would be different in other ways. While Wikipedia is a not-for-profit and ad-free endeavor, Knol has a more commercial bent: Authors could choose to have Google place ads on their pages and would get part of the revenue.
